Phonograms/Spelling:  The Spalding Method guides our students through direct teacher instruction in decoding and promoting spelling abilities.  It uses multi-sensory techniques to help students develop literacy skills. Students learn a marking system to help connect speech sounds to print.  They also learn to blend phonograms into words.

Literature: Students are learning to read and find main ideas and details, text structure, and will compare and contrast texts. They will read and comprehend literature, including stories, fables, and fairy tales.

Informational Text: Students will learn how to find textual evidence to answer questions and determine a main idea. They will learn how to determine the meaning of words by using context clues.

Writing: Students will write informative, narrative and opinion paragraphs. They also learn to demonstrate command of the conventions of Standard English grammar and usage. The goal is to write clearly and coherently with guidance and support. 

Math:  Students will learn how to add and subtract up to 3-digits, with and without regrouping, telling time to the nearest minute, how to measure in inches, feet, and centimeters, and how to use addition and subtraction to solve word problems.

Social Studies:  In second grade students will learn about geography, government, American history, and economics.  Some of the topics will learn about are: maps, the branches of the government, Westward expansion, and supply and demand.

Science:  Students will learn about matter, weather, erosion, the sky, and the planets.
