More About 4th Grade
ELA Reading/Writing
Students will read a variety of genres and themes. Students will learn about universal truths, such as kindness and friendship, as well as about cross curricular subject areas, such as life science and history. Students will also have the opportunity to read several types of creative literature. Students will apply comprehension, vocabulary, and word analysis skills as they read. The more materials students comprehend and read fluently, the more likely they are to become lifelong learners.
Students will engage and practice writing multi paragraph essays that include opinion, informational, and narrative essays. Over the course of the year, students will learn and practice the steps of the writing process. Students will learn the importance of grammar, usage, and mechanics that are critical for comprehension of both readers and writers. Students will have spelling words as part of their Foundational Skills portion of their lesson.
Math
Students will learn about numbers and operations, algebra, geometry, measurement, data analysis and probability.
Students will learn numeration including reading, writing, and understanding numbers through the millions. They will be able to comprehend place value through the millions. Students will estimate, round and compute the sum or difference of whole numbers including regrouping and word problems. Students will also use concepts of negative numbers on a number line, in counting and in temperature.
Place value with large numbers. Multi-digit multiplication and division. Adding and subtracting fractions. Decimal concepts. Time and money calculations. Measurement units (length, weight, capacity). Basic geometry concepts (lines, angles, shapes). Data analysis and graphing
Each lesson includes a mix of new concepts and problems from previous lessons to maintain fluency and prevent forgetting.
Incremental learning:
New concepts are introduced slowly and systematically, building on existing knowledge.
Focus on basic skills:
Emphasis on mastering foundational math operations like addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division with multi-digit numbers.
Geometry introduction:
Students are introduced to basic geometric shapes and concepts like perimeter and area.
Fraction understanding:
Develops understanding of fractions, including equivalent fractions and basic operations with fractions.
Real-world applications:
Many problems incorporate real-life scenarios to enhance understanding and relevance.
Social Studies
Students will learn about ancient civilizations, the age of exploration, and the building of a new country. Each lesson will give students the opportunity to engage with an Inquiry Journal and investigate with the Research Companion. The students will have opportunities to explore geography with each lesson. Students will experience print and digital resources.
Science
4th grade students will discover how Earth’s resources can be transformed into different forms of energy including electricity and magnetism. They will examine the different Earth systems and how they interact with each other. Students will learn how geological systems change and shape Earth and the evidence that is used to understand these changes. They will also study weather, climate, and how human interactions can impact the environment. Students will develop an understanding of the diversity of past and present organisms, factors impacting organism diversity, and evidence of change of organisms over time.
